What you can expect
Here's what you can expect generally from a hypnosis session with me:
I will speak to you at length about your reason for wanting hypnosis and will determine what kinds of suggestions I will need to give.
I will ask you about any fears or concerns you have in general. This is essential because if you're going to be able to relax and you're terrified of water, I wouldn't want to suggest that you imagine floating around on an ocean! I need to know what frightens you so I can avoid such problems.
I will also ask you about any fears or concerns you have about hypnosis, so that I can explain it to you and do everything possible to make you comfortable. Because hypnosis is really just a very deep state of relaxation, you need to be calm and reassured about the process.
You will be seated in a comfortable chair with a footstool. When we're ready to begin, I will give suggestions about relaxing, eventually getting you to focus on a happy, peaceful place (either real or in your imagination). At many points along the way, I will give you suggestions about remaining aware of everything, and of staying in complete control, and I will remind you several times that I have no control over you whatsoever.
You might begin feeling either very heavy or very light, possibly even a lovely drifting or floating sensation. You may become a bit warm and tingly. You will be extremely relaxed - able to move or speak if you need to, but generally, people don't want to move because they are so deliciously comfortable and peaceful.
Once you have entered a very deep state of relaxation (which is really all hypnosis is), I will begin offering suggestions that are designed to help you achieve your goal, whether it be to stop smoking, or eat a healthier diet, stick to that exercise program, get over your fears of public speaking or going to the dentist, or whatever else your goal may be.
After spending considerable time on this area, I will be quiet for a few minutes and allow you to visualise and strengthen any suggestions or images that are particularly helpful to you.
I will bring you out of the hypnotic state, and you will feel refreshed, relaxed, recharged and ready to take on the rest of your day. People usually tell me that they feel like they just had a whole body massage, or a good long nap!
I recommend a minimum of two sessions because despite all of my explanations about what to expect, invariably people are still wondering "Is this it? Am I doing it right? Is it working?" with their first session. With the second one, they know exactly what will happen and they relax much deeper than the first time, which allows the suggestions to have an even stronger and more lasting effect.
